Laser hair removal permanently removes hair by destroying the root of the hair follicles. We use specific wavelengths of light that target pigment, so the skin remains undamaged but the follicle is destroyed.
It takes the average client 18 months to two years to reach their clinical end point. Each area has a treatment interval that falls somewhere between 4-10 weeks depending on the area. Laser treatments are only effective on hair follicles that are in ANAGEN active growth cycle. At any given time, roughly 10% of your hair is actually in the growth phase. During the other times, the hair is migrating through the skin before finally shedding completely. It takes a few weeks for each of these phases to pass, and that is why we only treat on specific intervals.
The Anagen phase
This is the active growth phase. This is the only phase where laser hair removal is effective. Up to 20% of hair is actively growing during one Anagen growth phase anywhere on your body. The phase can last 3-4 months. This is why multiple treatments are necessary for laser hair removal to be effective for long-term results.
Catagen phase
The second phase, is the shedding phase. Laser hair removal is not effective during this phase. This phase usually lasts around three weeks.
Telogen Phase
The last phase or the dormant phase where up to 80% of hair can be in the Telogen phase at any time. Laser hair removal is not effective during this phase.
FOLLOW THE PRE-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS
Pre-treatment instructions are important to help your treatments be as safe as possible. Do not come into your treatment with recent sun exposure, unshaven areas, or if you’ve recently been on antibiotics or using vitamin A products prescribed or over the counter. These products can make your skin more proned to being burned.
FOLLOW THE POST-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS
Avoid extended UV exposure, working out immediately before and/or after treatment, hot baths and sauna, and chemical treatments.
BE HONEST WITH YOUR LASER TECHNICIAN
You may be tempted to not tell your laser technician about an antibiotic you are taking or recent sun exposure you’ve had. It is important to mention new changes in your life that may affect the outcome of treatment. Be honest with your laser technician about any new changes in lifestyle, medications or new skin care products so we can help you avoid an advere event.
